In Falkirk, green does not mean garden waste. The green bin is the household non-recyclable waste bin. Garden material belongs in the optional brown-bin service.

Weekly Food-Waste Collection
Unlike the four-week wheelie-bin cycles, Falkirk’s food caddy is collected every week.
Cooked & uncooked
Meat, fish and bones, fruit, vegetables, bread, cakes, pasta, rice and general household food leftovers can be separated.
Small indoor + outdoor caddy
Use the kitchen caddy first, then transfer the tied/wrapped contents into the larger kerbside caddy.
Lock the outdoor caddy
Pulling the handle upright locks the kerbside container and helps reduce access by animals.

Falkirk Brown Bin Permit 2026/27
April–November
Permitted brown bins are normally collected every four weeks. The exact date remains property-specific.
December–March
The service moves to an on-demand winter system. Permit holders can normally request one collection every four weeks rather than receiving an automatic scheduled round.
One permit per brown bin
There is no fixed limit on the number of brown bins at a property, but each bin you want emptied needs its own valid permit.
50% CTR concession
Eligible low-income residents receiving means-tested Council Tax Reduction can receive a 50% concession. A single-person discount alone does not qualify.
Share with a neighbour
Residents may privately share one brown bin, but one person registers and pays, and collection takes place from the registered address.
Nappies & Incontinence Waste: Falkirk’s AHP Collection
The four-week green-bin cycle can be difficult for homes producing significant disposable nappy or incontinence waste. Falkirk therefore operates an additional Absorbent Hygiene Products service.
Approved applicants
Applications are reviewed by Waste Services before a household joins the service.
Council white bags
Approved households receive council-issued white bags. Ordinarily up to two council bags are uplifted per collection unless another arrangement has been agreed.
Fortnightly
AHP bags are collected every two weeks, normally on the same day as the household’s black-box collection.

Red Tag on the Bin? That Is Not a Missed Collection
Falkirk calls accidental placement of non-recyclable material in a recycling bin “wishcycling”. Where the contents are wrong, the crew can leave the container unemptied and attach a red contamination tag.
What you should do
- Read the contamination tag.
- Remove the incorrect material.
- Put that material into its correct disposal route.
- Present the cleaned-up bin on its next scheduled date.

Falkirk currently offers a one-off out-of-service collection route at £15.80 per bin where a container needs an uplift before its next normal collection.
This should not be treated as a repeated substitute for sorting recycling correctly.

Four-Weekly Green Bin Too Small? Larger-Bin Applications
Falkirk does not automatically issue a larger residual bin simply because the standard green bin fills. The household must first show that the recycling services are being used properly.
Step 1: use every service
Food, glass, paper/card and blue-bin recyclables should be separated rather than occupying green-bin capacity.
Step 2: two-week waste audit
Applicants complete a waste-audit diary covering a two-week period before submitting the larger-bin application.
Step 3: council assessment
Applications are assessed individually, including households with specific medical or exceptional waste needs.

Falkirk Bulky Uplift: £50 for Up to Five Items
The concession applies to eligible residents receiving means-tested Council Tax Reduction, excluding a single-occupancy discount by itself. For the 2026/27 year, one qualifying uplift can be charged at £25; additional uplifts are charged at the normal rate.

Clinical Waste, Needles and Sharps
Do not treat medical waste as normal green-bin rubbish without first identifying the type of waste.
Lower-grade household hygiene waste
Falkirk is licensed to collect certain low-grade clinical waste, including qualifying incontinence products and nappies. Households producing these materials may benefit from the AHP service.
Sharps are different
Used needles and sharps must not be placed in any household kerbside bin or improvised container such as a drinks bottle or can.

High Winds & Service Disruption: Falkirk-Specific Tips
Do not put it out too early
During severe wind, Falkirk recommends waiting until collection morning and presenting the bin before 6:30am rather than leaving a light bin outside all night.
Use shelter
Where safe, place the bin next to a wall, fence or another available kerbside shelter.
Cluster with neighbours
Where no shelter exists, placing bins together can give them more stability than leaving each one exposed.
