Food Waste Caddy: Weekly Preston Collection
Food waste collections began from Monday 20 April 2026. Your caddy is collected weekly on the same day as your general waste and recycling collections.
Put in
Vegetable peelings, cooked and raw meat/fish, bones, baked goods, fruit, rice, pasta, plate scrapings, mouldy food, eggs, tea bags and coffee grounds.
Keep out
Plastic bags, liquids, packaging, glass, napkins, non-food items, compostable packaging and general waste.
Place it visibly
Leave the caddy next to your bins by 7am. Keep the handle upright so the lid locks and crews can see it.
Red vs Yellow Recycling: Preston Sorting Decision Cards
The easiest mistake is putting paper/card in yellow or containers in red. Use this quick decision set.
Choose red if it is paper or card
Newspaper, magazine, envelope, junk mail, cardboard packaging, cereal box, flattened cardboard and similar clean paper/card items.

Pink Bags: Eligibility, Timing and Fine Warning
Pink bags are only for existing eligible residential properties that have no space for wheeled bins. They are not a general shortcut for extra rubbish.
Eligibility
Only existing eligible homes with no wheeled-bin space can use pink bags. Preston decides which properties qualify.
Timing
Put bags out from 6pm the night before collection day and by 7am on collection day. Do not leave them out on other days.
Amount
Eligible homes can leave two to three pink bags per week at the front of the property unless given a different collection point.
Bulky Household Waste: Book Before Leaving Items Outside
Use bulky waste collection for large household items that do not fit in a grey bin. Count items before booking and follow the official placement instructions.
Usually suitable
Sofas, beds, mattresses, wardrobes, carpets, desks, cookers, dishwashers and similar domestic items where listed.
List every item
Only booked items are likely to be collected. Do not add extras after the booking unless the official system allows it.
Not for businesses
Household bulky collection is not a business waste service. Business waste needs a separate commercial route.
