Brentwood’s household collection system is different from many wheelie-bin councils. Most households use black refuse sacks, reusable blue and white recycling sacks, a red glass box and a separate food-waste caddy, while garden waste is a paid fortnightly service.

The current council calendar library contains Routes 1, 2A, 2B, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Several routes share the same normal weekday, but they should still be treated as separate route calendars because recycling and garden-waste markings can differ.

Black Sack: Weekly Household Refuse
All domestic households in Brentwood receive a weekly refuse collection. The council specifies black sacks for this service.
Use black refuse sacks
Other coloured sacks may be mistaken for recycling or garden waste and can therefore be left by the crew.
Put the sacks out only on the designated collection day rather than leaving them at the kerb overnight where animals can tear them open.
Using your own wheelie bin?
Residents can store general rubbish inside a wheelie bin, but standard refuse sacks should still be used inside.
Brentwood says wheelie bins are not normally mechanically tipped. Carrier bags and wheelie-bin liners are not a substitute for the normal refuse sacks.

Brentwood already operates a separate weekly food-waste service, so residents do not need to wait for a future rollout.

Why separate food?
Brentwood says collected household food waste is sent to an anaerobic-digestion facility.
The material can be used to create renewable energy and a fertiliser-type output rather than occupying space in ordinary residual refuse.
The council estimates that separating food can help households recycle up to around 20% more waste.

Brentwood provides an internal kitchen caddy to store food scraps before they are transferred to the external collection caddy.

The £60 fee includes hire of the council brown bin and 25 fortnightly garden-waste collections, excluding the Christmas holiday interruption. Households can hire more than one brown bin.

Brentwood’s 7:30am Kerbside Rule

Collection times can vary. The service requirement is that refuse, food waste and recycling are available by 7:30am.
Front kerbside
Put the collection at the kerbside at the front of your property unless you have an approved assisted arrangement.
Keep access clear
A parked vehicle or another obstruction can prevent the crew from reaching your sacks and containers.

Brentwood has a much tighter missed-collection reporting window than many councils.

Brentwood says it cannot return for a missed collection if it was not reported on the collection day or the following working day.
When a valid missed collection is reported, the council aims to collect it by the end of the next working day.

Ingatestone Bin Pilot: The Trial Has Ended
Residents can still encounter older pilot information in searches or household paperwork. That trial is no longer the current Ingatestone collection arrangement.
2025
Around 500 selected Ingatestone households took part in a six-month trial testing a different residual-waste collection approach.
Week commencing 13 April 2026
Brentwood confirmed the pilot would finish as planned.
From Tuesday 14 April 2026
Black-sack collections returned to the normal weekly schedule for the pilot households.
Assisted Household Refuse Collections
Brentwood can provide an assisted service where a resident cannot physically put their bagged household waste at the kerbside.
Main eligibility situation
The council describes the service for residents who are housebound, elderly or infirm and have no other able-bodied person at home who can put the waste out.

When booking, Brentwood allows residents to select the first available date. Items must be moved outside the property to a visible collection position before the crew arrives.

Brentwood Has Two Essex Household Recycling Centres — They Are Not Identical
Coxtie Green and Mountnessing both require advance booking for most car visits, but their opening days, vehicle rules and DIY-waste acceptance differ.
Brentwood Recycling Centre — Coxtie Green Road
Coxtie Green is the more flexible of Brentwood’s two Essex County Council household recycling centres for certain DIY material and larger vehicle types.
Open every normal day
Unlike Mountnessing, the current Coxtie Green schedule does not have a regular Tuesday closure.
Limited household DIY
Coxtie Green accepts limited quantities of eligible DIY waste where the resident carried out the work themselves at their own household.
Larger vehicle booking
The site has booking options for vans, pickups and qualifying large trailers, subject to Essex restrictions.
Booking is free. Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists have exemptions under the current booking rules. Proof of Essex residency may be requested.
Mountnessing Recycling Centre — Roman Road
Mountnessing is useful for normal household recycling, but its restrictions are tighter than Coxtie Green.
No DIY / rubble
Mountnessing does not accept DIY waste or rubble under the current site rules.
No vans / pickups
Vans, pickups and large trailers are not accepted at Mountnessing.

Normal car visits need a booked slot, with the same Blue Badge, pedestrian and cyclist exceptions.

Keep blue paper dry
Close the reusable blue sack so rain does not soak newspapers and cardboard before collection.
