Braintree Council Bin Collection: Official Facts Residents Need First

Braintree District Council’s waste and recycling service changed in 2026, so the official calendar is more important than ever.

Postcode lookup

The official form asks for your postcode and then your property address. Use this for collection dates rather than old calendars.

New service live

The new recycling and waste collection service began from 1 June 2026 across Braintree District.

Out by 7am

Braintree’s missed-bin checklist says bins and boxes should be out at the collection point by 7am on collection day.

Missed-bin window

Report missed waste after 3pm on collection day and up to 12 noon on the following working day.

Important 2026 warning: clear plastic recycling sacks are no longer the normal route under the new service. Recycling in new red-lidded and blue-lidded bins should be loose, not bagged, and lids should be fully shut.

Braintree Bin Collection Day: Find Your Schedule by Postcode

Your Braintree bin day depends on your exact property, not just whether you live in Braintree, Witham, Halstead, Coggeshall, Kelvedon, Earls Colne, Great Notley, Silver End, Gosfield or a nearby village.

1

Open the official collection form

Use Braintree’s “Find your bin collection day” form. It is the safest answer for “Braintree Council bin collection”, “Braintree bin day” and “Braintree collection calendar” searches.

2

Enter your full postcode

Use the full postcode, then select your exact address from the list. Nearby flats, farms, new-builds and shared access properties may have a different arrangement.

3

Save the new 2026 calendar

After the June 2026 change, save the new schedule for food waste, paper/card, mixed recycling, grey waste and garden waste if you subscribe.

4

Present containers by 7am

Put bins and boxes at the normal collection point by 7am. The usual collection point is normally the front boundary of your property.

Resident tip: download or screenshot your first few collection dates after the 2026 switch. The grey bin is now less frequent, so a wrong week can create a bigger problem than before.

New service from June 2026

Braintree Waste and Recycling Collections Changed From 1 June 2026

Braintree’s new service is part of England’s Simpler Recycling changes and is designed to let residents recycle more from the doorstep.

Service New collection pattern What residents should remember
Food wasteWeekly collectionUse the food caddy/bin for food waste rather than putting it in the grey bin.
Paper and cardAlternate fortnightly collectionRed-lidded bin or property-specific boxes. Keep paper/card clean, dry and loose.
Mixed recyclingAlternate fortnightly collectionBlue-lidded bin or property-specific boxes for glass, tins, cans, plastic, film and cartons where accepted.
Grey wasteThree-weekly collectionFor non-recyclable waste only. The lid must shut and side waste is not collected.
Garden wasteFortnightly paid serviceOptional annual subscription, separate from standard recycling changes.

Standard vs non-standard properties: most standard properties receive new 240-litre wheeled recycling bins with red and blue lids. Non-standard properties may receive alternative recycling boxes because of access, steps, slopes, no garden, or container movement issues.

Red-lidded bin

Paper and card recycling. Keep it clean and dry, and do not put items inside plastic bags.

Blue-lidded bin

Mixed recycling such as glass bottles and jars, tins, cans, plastics, plastic film, bags, cartons and similar accepted containers.

Food waste

Weekly food waste collection should reduce odour and free up space in the grey bin.

Grey bin

Collected every three weeks, so use recycling and food waste properly to keep grey waste low.

What goes where

Braintree Grey Bin, Food Bin, Red-Lidded Bin and Blue-Lidded Bin Explained

The new service works only if residents use the correct container and avoid contamination.

  • Meat and fish, raw or cooked

  • Paper and newspapers

Missed collection

Braintree Missed Bin Collection: Report After 3pm and Before 12 Noon Next Working Day

Braintree gives a specific missed-bin reporting window, so timing matters.

1

Wait until after 3pm

You can report missed waste after 3pm on the collection date. Reporting earlier may be too soon because crews may still be working.

2

Report before 12 noon next working day

If you report within the official timeframe, Braintree aims to collect the missed bin within two working days.

3

Check the basic conditions first

Check service updates, confirm the right collection date, make sure the bin was out by 7am, and confirm the bin was at the normal collection point.

4

Leave the container out

If you report a missed collection, leave the waste container at your normal collection point so crews can return if appropriate.

Before reporting: Braintree asks residents to check contamination, incorrect materials, overweight bins, frozen contents and compacted waste. A bin with the wrong items may not be treated as a missed collection.

Garden waste

Braintree Garden Waste Subscription 2026/27: Cost, Dates and Auto-Renewal

Braintree garden waste is an optional paid service, separate from normal waste and recycling collections.

The 2026/27 garden waste subscription costs £55 and runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. It is payable in one instalment before the service starts. Where paid online by debit or credit card, the subscription may auto-renew each year unless you cancel in time.

Cost

£55 for the 2026/27 garden waste subscription year.

Collection pattern

Garden waste is collected every two weeks as a paid annual subscription service.

Cooling-off note

The council explains that there is a 14-day cooling-off period after payment before collections begin unless you waive that right by presenting the bin.

Missed garden waste

Missed garden waste should be reported by 12 noon on the day following the scheduled collection.

Moving home: Braintree says if you move within the district and have a garden waste subscription, you should take your garden bin with you and notify the council in advance so the permit can be updated to the new address.

Large items

Braintree Bulky Waste Collection: Prices, Booking and Boundary Rules

Braintree’s bulky waste service collects large household items such as sofas, domestic appliances and garden equipment from outside residential properties.

Number of bulky items Price from 1 April 2026 Resident note
1 item£20.00Useful for a single large item.
2 to 3 items£30.00Best value for a small clear-out.
4 to 6 items£55.00Check whether any item counts as more than one item.
7 to 9 items£80.00Read the booking rules before paying.

Items should be placed at the boundary of your property by 7am on the agreed collection date, where household waste is normally presented. They must be easy to access and visible from the road. If you need to cancel, the council says you must contact them by 2pm at least two working days before the scheduled collection date.

Do not leave items out too early: bulky items should not block pavements, gates, steps or access points. Large items left outside too early can look like fly-tipping and may not be collected if they do not match the booking.

Recycling centres and banks

Braintree Recycling Centres, Recycling Banks and Extra Waste

For waste that does not belong in kerbside bins, use official recycling centres, recycling banks or item-specific disposal routes.

Braintree District Council links residents to Essex County Council recycling centres, including local centres serving the Braintree and Witham area. The council also provides local recycling bank information, including glass banks and textile recycling locations.

Household recycling centres

Use Love Essex / Essex County Council recycling centre information for live site details, accepted items and opening rules.

Glass banks

Braintree provides local glass bottle and jar recycling banks. Do not leave recycling on the ground if a bank is full.

Textile banks

Some bring-bank sites include textile recycling bins for clothes, curtains, bedding, towels, paired shoes and similar items.

Flats and communal bins

Braintree Flats, Communal Properties and Non-Standard Waste Collections

If you live in a flat, maisonette, shared courtyard, managed block or property without normal bin storage, your collection setup may not match a standard house.

Braintree’s 2026 service includes property assessments. Some properties receive standard wheeled bins, while others receive non-standard boxes or communal arrangements because of steps, slopes, limited external space, no garden or access issues.

Standard service

Assessed standard properties receive additional 240-litre recycling wheeled bins with red and blue lids.

Non-standard service

Some properties receive boxes or alternative containers if wheeled bins are not practical.

Communal properties

The council works with managing agents, landlords and housing associations for shared facilities.

Flat resident tip: if your block does not have the correct recycling containers, ask the managing agent to contact the council. Do not guess using the closest house’s bin calendar.

Bins and capacity

Braintree Replacement Bins, Larger Bins and Assisted Collections

Use the official grey bin and My Account routes if your bin is broken, lost, missing when you move in, or you need more capacity.

Braintree says there is no charge to replace a lost or damaged grey bin. Larger or additional bin capacity is not automatic, but households may qualify if they have a larger family, disposable nappies or incontinence pads, or a household member with a medical condition that creates significant extra waste.

Replacement bin

Use if the bin is broken, lost, damaged or missing when you move into a property.

Larger bin

Apply if your household meets the eligibility criteria for extra non-recyclable waste capacity.

Assisted collection

Use My Account or the council route if you need support with moving bins because of access or health needs.
