Bangor Refuse Collection: Bin Days, Missed Bins & Waste
Looking for your next Bangor grey-bin, blue-recycling, green/brown organic or glass-box collection? Household waste in Bangor, County Down is managed by Ards and North Down Borough Council, and collection dates vary by address.
This guide goes beyond a simple bin-day answer: it explains the 7am–8pm presentation rule, Bangor’s 72-hour missed-bin window, strict grey-bin recycling checks, two-week blue and food/garden services, four-week glass collection, extra-capacity charges, assisted lifts, £34 bulky collections and the pre-booked Balloo Recycling Centre.
This article is for Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland — mainly BT19 and BT20 — where household collections are operated by Ards and North Down Borough Council. It is not the refuse guide for Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales. If your postcode begins LL57, use Cyngor Gwynedd’s waste service instead.
Bangor Bin Days: Quick Answer
Use Ards and North Down Borough Council’s address-based collection calendar or the Bin-ovation app for the exact date at your home. Do not guess from another Bangor street or copy a neighbour’s calendar.
How to Check Your Exact Bangor Refuse Collection Date
Collection dates are address-specific. A generic fortnightly timetable tells you the frequency, but it does not tell you which Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday your household is actually on.
Open the council bin page
Start from Ards and North Down’s official Bins and Recycling service.
Search your address
Use the full Bangor address and postcode rather than a nearby house.
Check every stream
Grey, blue, green/brown and glass can appear on different schedules.
Save it
Use the Bin-ovation app or save the dates to your phone, particularly before bank holidays.
Bangor Household Bin Collection Schedule
| Container | Main use | Normal frequency | Key rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey bin | Non-recyclable residual household waste only | Fortnightly | No food, glass or other material available through council recycling routes. |
| Blue bin | Paper, card, accepted rigid plastics, metal packaging, cartons and aerosols | Every 2 weeks | No batteries or electronic equipment. |
| Green or brown bin | All food waste, garden vegetation and other accepted compostable material | Every 2 weeks all year | Every household needs this service even without a garden. |
| Glass collection box | Glass bottles and jars | Every 4 weeks | Do not overfill above the top of the box. |
Bangor Bin Colours Explained
Grey Bin
Residual waste only — material that cannot use kerbside recycling, a recycling centre or community recycling bank.
Blue Bin
Clean dry household paper, cardboard, rigid plastics, cans, foil, cartons and empty aerosol cans.
Green / Brown Bin
Food and garden organics are combined in this stream. Households receive either a green or brown bin — they perform the same job.
Glass Box
Household glass bottles and jars are kept separate from blue mixed recycling.
The Bangor 7am–8pm Collection Rule
Out by 7am
Collection times vary, so put the correct container at the kerbside or agreed collection point by 7am.
Leave until 8pm
A late-running route can still arrive in the evening. The council recommends leaving the container presented until 8pm.
Bring it back in
Return emptied bins to the property as soon as practical rather than leaving them permanently on the footpath.
Bangor Missed-Bin Checker
Use this before submitting a report. It separates an actual council miss from a bin that was late, contaminated, overweight or affected by a known route problem.
Bangor Missed-Bin Reporting Window: 3:30pm + 72 Hours
When You Do Not Need to Report the Missed Bin Yourself
Ards and North Down says its collection teams already report some route-wide operational failures.
Vehicle breakdown
Crews can log a route that could not be completed because of a refuse-vehicle fault.
Bad weather
Unsafe weather can prevent collection from parts of the route.
Roadworks
Temporary works can block access for a full-size collection vehicle.
Poor parking
Cars blocking a narrow road can prevent the lorry reaching presented bins.
Grey Bin: Bangor’s Strict “Non-Recyclable Waste Only” Rule
Bangor’s grey bin is not an ordinary mixed rubbish bin. Council recycling guidance says recyclable material must be separated using the blue, green/brown, glass and recycling-centre services.
Keep these out
- Food waste
- Glass bottles and jars
- Blue-bin paper and cardboard
- Accepted rigid plastics
- Metal cans and foil
- Drink cartons
- Material that should use an HRC or recycling bank
What belongs in grey?
Use it only for household waste that cannot reasonably be recycled, composted or separated using another council service.
Disposable nappies are one example highlighted in the council’s recycling guidance.
What Happens If Recyclables Keep Going in the Grey Bin?
The council’s current recycling guide describes a progressive monitoring system rather than immediately rejecting every first mistake.
Bangor Blue Bin: What Goes In?
| Material | Blue bin? | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Newspapers, magazines, office paper | Yes | Keep paper clean and dry. |
| Cardboard | Yes | Remove plastic tape and tear large boxes down. |
| Plastic bottles | Yes | Rinse, squash and reattach the lid. |
| Plastic pots, tubs and trays | Yes | Rinse obvious food residue away. |
| Food / drink cans | Yes | Scrape food out and rinse. |
| Tin foil / aluminium dishes | Yes | Remove food residue. |
| Drink cartons | Yes | Rinse, squash and replace the lid. |
| Empty aerosol cans | Yes | Do not crush or pierce. |
| Glass bottles / jars | No | Use the separate glass collection box. |
| Soft plastic film | No | Use a participating supermarket drop-off point. |
| Batteries / electrical equipment | No | Use an appropriate HRC or dedicated recycling route. |
Green or Brown Bin: Food + Garden Waste Together
Bangor residents may have a green bin or a brown bin. You do not need both: the council uses both colours for the same organic-waste service.
Food accepted
- Raw and cooked meat
- Fish and bones
- Fruit and vegetables
- Rice and pasta
- Bread, cakes and pastries
- Eggshells
- Plate scrapings and leftovers
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Out-of-date food with packaging removed
Garden / compostable material
- Grass and leaves
- Flowers and weeds
- Hedge cuttings
- Plants and shrubs
- Short branches and twigs
- Shredded paper
- Kitchen roll and tissues
- Small amounts of cold ashes
- Compostable pet bedding and small amounts of pet waste
Bangor Food Caddy & Liner Rules
Use compostable liners
Food-caddy liners need to be clearly marked as compostable. Ordinary biodegradable or degradable plastic bags are not the correct substitute.
No liner?
Food can be wrapped in newspaper or kitchen roll, or in some circumstances placed directly in the green/brown bin.
Extra liners
The council provides households with an annual supply. Additional rolls of 26 compostable liners are currently sold for £1 at designated council facilities.
Bangor Glass Collection: Every Four Weeks
Put in the box
- Glass bottles
- Glass jars
- All normal household colours and sizes
- Lids may remain attached
Presentation
- Rinse bottles and jars.
- Make the box clearly visible at the kerbside.
- Do not fill glass above the top of the box.
- Do not put broken glass into the kerbside box.
Soft Plastics, Batteries & Electricals: Keep Them Out of the Blue Bin
Soft plastics
Carrier bags, bread bags, frozen-food bags and similar flexible plastic packaging are not accepted in Bangor’s blue wheelie bin. Many supermarkets offer a separate collection point.
Batteries
Household batteries must not be hidden inside the blue bin. Balloo Recycling Centre has a dedicated battery-recycling route.
Electrical equipment
Electrical equipment is also excluded from the blue household bin and can use the appropriate electrical recycling stream at Balloo.
Extra Bangor Bin Capacity: Current 2026 Charges
Additional capacity is not identical for every waste stream. Eligibility, route space and medical or household-size criteria can apply.
| Extra container | 2026 price | Eligibility / condition |
|---|---|---|
| Additional 240L grey bin | £35.50 | Normally for six or more permanent residents or a medical / disability-related waste need. |
| 360L blue bin | £48.85 | Priority goes to six-person-plus households and medical/disability needs; others may be considered where resources allow. |
| Additional green/brown bin | £35.50 + £53 annual collection charge | Subject to spare capacity on the household’s collection route. |
| Additional glass box | £8 | Maximum two boxes emptied per household per scheduled glass collection. |
Damaged, Cracked, Stolen or Missing Bangor Bins
Under 5-year warranty
Wheeled bins have a five-year manufacturer guarantee covering qualifying cracks and splits. A qualifying fault can be replaced free during that period.
Misuse is different
Damage caused by misuse — for example hot ash — is not covered by the normal manufacturing warranty.
Theft / third-party damage
Theft or damage caused by another person is also outside the free five-year manufacturing-fault warranty.
Bangor Windy-Day Tip: Council Bin Clips
£4 automatic-opening bin clip
Ards and North Down sells bin clips for £4 from council reception points including City Hall in Bangor.
The clips fit wheeled bins with a conventional handle and are designed to keep the lid closed while stored or presented, then automatically release when the bin is tipped by the collection vehicle.
This can be particularly useful on exposed or windy collection days when an unsecured light lid could lift.
Assisted Bin Collections in Bangor
Residents who cannot physically present their container at the nearest adopted road can apply for an assisted lift.
Site assessment
A technical supervisor assesses the property, access route and container location to make sure collection can be carried out safely.
Health validation
The application can be validated by a GP. Where that cannot reasonably be obtained, another registered health worker or, in some circumstances, council management may validate it.
Access must remain safe
Unsafe private roads, overgrown hedges or access likely to damage a refuse vehicle can cause the assisted service to be suspended until the problem is corrected.

DIY Rubble: Balloo Has a Special Local Rule
Limited household DIY amount
The council permits up to a maximum single-axle trailer load of suitable small-scale household DIY rubble, broken into manageable pieces.
Not construction waste
Rubble from professional construction, building or demolition activity is not accepted as normal household recycling-centre waste.
Powdered plaster, gypsum products and hazardous material are also excluded from this small-rubble allowance.
Bangor Reuse Options Before Throwing Something Away
Balloo furniture reuse
Suitable furniture, décor and bicycles can be left in Balloo’s reuse container for redistribution through local social-enterprise reuse schemes.
Free reusable paint
Paint suitable for reuse is diverted from disposal. Residents, schools and community organisations can obtain reusable paint free through the council’s Paint Reuse Scheme.
Bangor Repair Café
Bangor also has a volunteer Repair Café holding repair events for electrical, textile, woodwork, sewing and general household repairs, helping residents avoid disposing of fixable items.
Bangor Bank-Holiday Bin Collections
Holiday weeks can alter the normal collection day, so do not simply use the weekday stored in your phone all year.
One-day-later pattern
Several 2026 bank-holiday arrangements moved household collections one day later than the normal schedule.
For example, the August Bank Holiday moved the Monday collection to Tuesday and the following affected weekday routes forward by one day.
Check each holiday
Christmas, New Year and other public holidays can use their own arrangements. The current holiday page or Bin-ovation calendar should be treated as the final source.
Bangor Local Bin Tips Residents Can Actually Use
Check at 3:30pm, not noon
If the road still has full bins at lunchtime, the route may simply be running later. The council’s reporting system does not open until 3:30pm.
Keep the green/brown bin active in winter
Even without grass or hedge cuttings, food still belongs in the organic bin every two weeks throughout winter.
Separate glass immediately
Keeping a small kitchen container for bottles and jars prevents glass accidentally entering the grey or blue bin before the four-week collection.
Save the 72-hour deadline
If your collection is genuinely missed, report quickly rather than waiting until the following week.
Pre-sort Balloo loads
Organise timber, electricals, metal, cardboard and garden waste before leaving home so you can move efficiently between the correct site containers.
Repair before replacing
Furniture reuse, paint reuse and Bangor’s repair community can sometimes save both disposal costs and the cost of buying a replacement item.

Yes. Access to Balloo Household Recycling Centre is by pre-booked slot. Residents need their booking reference and proof that they live within Ards and North Down Borough. Waste should be sorted for recycling before arrival.
