Quick answer

How do I check Gwynedd Council bin collection dates?

Use Cyngor Gwynedd’s official “When is my waste collected?” page. Enter your postcode, select your address and click “waste and recycling calendar” to download or print your collection calendar. Blue recycling box or Cartgylchu collections are weekly, brown food waste bins are weekly, green wheelie bins or up to 3 black sacks are collected every 3 weeks, and paid brown garden waste bins are collected separately after you order the service. Collections normally take place between 06:00 and 18:00 on your collection day.

This guide is built from official Gwynedd Council pages, not guessed collection calendars, social-media screenshots or information copied from another Welsh council.

Official collection calendar

The council’s postcode calendar is the safest way to confirm your address-specific dates and print your waste and recycling calendar.

Weekly recycling and food waste

Gwynedd collects Cartgylchu or blue recycling boxes every week and brown food waste bins every week.

Three-weekly general waste

Green wheelie bins, or up to 3 black sacks where there is no wheelie bin, are collected every 3 weeks.

Booked recycling centres

Gwynedd recycling centres require a booked slot before visiting, and mixed waste in bags is not accepted without sorting.

Gwynedd Council Bin Collection Calendar 2026: Check Your Dates by Postcode

Your Gwynedd collection day is property-specific, especially in rural areas, narrow-access streets and places using black sacks instead of a green wheelie bin.

Use the official postcode calendar if you live in Bangor, Caernarfon, Pwllheli, Porthmadog, Dolgellau, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Harlech, Y Bala, Tywyn, Barmouth, Bethesda, Criccieth, Penrhyndeudraeth, Abersoch, Nefyn or a rural property. Do not rely on a neighbouring village’s calendar, because Gwynedd’s geography, long rural routes and different collection containers mean one road can follow a different pattern from another.

1

Open the official collection page

Use the official When is my waste collected? page.

2

Enter your postcode

Use the complete postcode and then select your exact address. This avoids confusion where collection points, black-sack arrangements or narrow-access lorries differ.

3

Click “waste and recycling calendar”

The official page explains that you can download and print your collection calendar after entering your postcode and selecting your address.

4

Check all streams, not only the green bin

Weekly recycling, weekly food waste, three-weekly general waste and optional brown garden waste can all have different practical rules.

5

Put containers out at the right time

The council collects between 06:00 and 18:00. The normal advice is to put containers out the night before, but in poor weather use the council’s severe-weather guidance.

Gwynedd resident tip: save a printed calendar if your mobile signal is poor or you live in a rural area. It is easier than guessing whether this week is recycling, food, green bin or garden waste.

Collection schedule

Gwynedd Bin Collection Schedule: Weekly Recycling, Weekly Food Waste and Three-Weekly Green Bin

Gwynedd’s waste system is different from many English councils because recycling and food waste are weekly, while residual waste is every 3 weeks.

Container Collection frequency What it is for Key resident reminder
Blue recycling box / Cartgylchu Every week Sorted dry recycling: paper/card, cans/plastics/cartons and glass. Use the right compartment or box. Do not mix everything together.
Brown food waste bin Every week Cooked and raw food waste using council-provided liners. Do not pour liquids such as milk or oil into the food bin.
Green wheelie bin Every 3 weeks Household waste that cannot be recycled. Only one green bin is emptied per property unless council-approved extra capacity applies.
Up to 3 black sacks Every 3 weeks For properties without a green wheelie bin. Eligible homes may also order a hessian sack to protect bags from animals.
Brown garden waste bin Fortnightly after paid order Grass, leaves, twigs, flowers, plants and weeds. 2026 service costs £41 for 22 collections of 1 brown wheelie bin.

Simple memory: recycling and food waste every week; green general waste every 3 weeks; paid garden waste every 2 weeks during the garden waste season.

Bin types

What Goes in Gwynedd Cartgylchu, Blue Box, Brown Food Bin, Green Bin and Brown Garden Bin?

The main rule in Gwynedd is separation. The Cartgylchu system works only if paper/card, cans/plastics/cartons and glass stay in the right sections.

Cartgylchu / blue boxes

Weekly dry recycling

The Cartgylchu has separate sections for paper/card, cans/plastics/cartons and glass.

  • Top box: paper, newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail, shredded paper and card
  • Middle box: food and drink cans, foil, aerosols, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and cartons
  • Lower box: glass bottles and jars
  • No soft plastic, cling film, crisp packets or polystyrene

Brown food bin

Weekly food waste

The 22 litre brown food bin is for raw and cooked food waste.

  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Cheese, bread, beans and plate scrapings
  • Meat, fish, eggs and tea bags
  • No liquids such as milk or oil

Green waste bin

General household waste

The green wheelie bin is for household waste that cannot be recycled.

  • Only one green bin emptied per property unless approved
  • No additional bags or side waste
  • No electrical equipment
  • No builders waste

Brown garden bin

Paid garden waste

The paid brown garden bin is for loose garden waste.

  • Grass
  • Leaves
  • Twigs
  • Flowers, plants and weeds

Important: Gwynedd says green general waste collections do not accept side waste. If you regularly run out of green-bin space, first make sure food waste and all recyclable items are being separated every week.

Missed collection

Missed Bin Collection Gwynedd: Check Current Issues, Date and Sticker Before Reporting

If your bin, Cartgylchu, blue box or food bin was not emptied, check the official reasons before sending a missed collection report.

Cyngor Gwynedd asks residents to check whether there are current collection issues in the area, whether the bin or box was out at the correct time and day, and whether there were unsuitable items inside. If a sticker has been left, it may explain why the item was not collected. You can report online through the official route or call 01766 771000.

1

Confirm the correct collection day

Use the official postcode calendar. Do not assume it was due because a different container was emptied nearby.

2

Check current collection issues

Gwynedd lists known collection problems. If your area is already listed, the council may already be aware.

3

Check your container

Look for a sticker or tag explaining wrong items, weight, access, timing or other non-collection reason.

4

Report through the official route

Use the missed box/bin page or contact Galw Gwynedd on 01766 771000 if you cannot use the online account route.

Rural route tip: crews may collect between 06:00 and 18:00 and not necessarily at the same time each week. Check later in the day before assuming a container has been missed.

Garden waste

Gwynedd Garden Waste Collection 2026: Brown Bin Price, Extra Bins and Sticker Rule

Gwynedd’s brown wheelie bin garden waste collection is optional and paid. It is separate from the weekly brown food waste bin.

The 2026 garden waste service costs £41 a year for 22 collections, emptying 1 brown wheelie bin every two weeks. There are no collections over Christmas and New Year. The service is a fixed price for the year, so joining later does not reduce the annual fee. Each house can order up to 4 brown garden bins, and additional brown bins are listed at £34 a year for each extra bin.

What goes in

Grass, leaves, twigs, flowers, plants and weeds. Put garden waste loose in the brown bin or garden waste bags.

After payment

After you pay, the council posts a sticker within 10 working days, though it can take longer during busy periods.

How to order

Order online through a Cyngor Gwynedd account or call 01766 771000.

No refund expectation

The garden waste terms say the council will do its best to collect if it misses a garden bin, but refunds are not provided for missed or unable-to-collect cases.

Do not confuse brown bins: the smaller brown food waste bin is weekly and free for food waste. The larger brown garden waste wheelie bin is paid and for garden waste only.

Recycling centres

Gwynedd Recycling Centres: Book a Slot Before Visiting

Gwynedd recycling centres require a booked slot before you visit. If you arrive without a booking, the council says you will be turned away.

The council also says mixed waste in bags is not accepted at recycling centres. If you have not sorted waste before arriving, you may be asked to open each bag and put individual items into the correct skips. The sites are for domestic household waste only, not business, shop, charity shop, event, organisation or landlord renovation waste.

Large items

Gwynedd Bulky Waste Collection: Large Items, Electricals and What the Council Cannot Collect

Large items should not be left next to the green bin, black sacks, recycling boxes or public street bins.

Cyngor Gwynedd’s bulky waste collection page lets residents arrange collection online, by calling 01766 771000 and paying by card, or by visiting a Siop Gwynedd and paying by cheque. The council also reminds residents that large or electrical items can be taken to recycling centres free of charge, subject to booking and site rules.

Examples of bulky items

Furniture, bikes, exercise equipment, mirrors, internal doors, large filing cabinets, commodes and other listed household items may be eligible depending on the official list.

Items not collected

The council does not collect builders waste, garden waste, surplus household waste, clinical waste or upright/grand pianos through the bulky waste service.

Reuse before disposal

Before booking, consider whether the item can be reused, donated, repaired or taken to the correct recycling centre stream.

Weather and rural routes

Gwynedd Bin Collections in Severe Weather: Wind, Snow, Rural Roads and Loose Recycling

Bad weather matters in Gwynedd because recycling boxes, sacks and rural roads can be affected by wind, ice and access issues.

Cyngor Gwynedd asks residents to help prevent litter during poor weather. If recycling containers are only half full and you can manage, consider waiting until the following collection when the weather may be calmer. In poor weather, put waste and recycling out on the morning of collection, as close to but no later than 6am, and retrieve containers as soon as possible after collection.

High-value weather checks

Use these checks when strong wind, snow, ice or heavy rain is forecast.

Morning set-out in bad weather

Put containers out close to 6am in poor weather, instead of leaving light boxes out overnight.

Sheltered spot

Place containers against a wall or fence where possible, facing inwards to reduce wind exposure.

Box lighter items

Use heavier containers to shelter lighter boxes or bags where safe and practical.

Label containers

Mark your house number or name on containers so crews or neighbours can return them after windy collections.
