East Lindsey Refuse Collection: Bin Days & Council Guide
East Lindsey’s household collection system is easy to get wrong because there are three main wheeled-bin streams rather than a simple two-bin fortnightly rota. Black rubbish is normally collected every two weeks, while grey mixed recycling and the purple-lidded paper-and-card bin normally alternate on separate four-week cycles.
This practical guide shows you how to find your exact date, understand the black-grey-black-purple pattern, meet the 5:30am rule, avoid an 80kg rejection, report genuinely missed bins, manage £55 green-waste collections and prepare correctly for East Lindsey’s new weekly food-waste service.
Quick Answer: Which East Lindsey Bin Is Due?
Check your postcode and exact property first. East Lindsey District Council has an address-level waste collection finder. Use that rather than attempting to work out the next bin solely from what neighbours have put outside.
One Large District, Many Collection Rounds
East Lindsey covers a large rural and coastal area. Residents in places such as Skegness, Louth, Mablethorpe, Horncastle, Alford, Spilsby, Woodhall Spa, Wragby, Sutton on Sea and surrounding villages should use their own property lookup instead of copying a timetable from another town or parish.
Rural access, sack collections, flats and road closures can also make one property’s practical collection arrangements different from another nearby address.
How to Check Your Exact East Lindsey Refuse Collection Day
East Lindsey’s postcode finder is the most useful starting point because collection days differ by address and the 2026 food-waste rollout may also introduce revised household calendars.
Open the postcode finder
Use East Lindsey District Council’s official Waste Collection Days service.
Enter the postcode
Search the postcode belonging to the household whose bins you need to check.
Choose the exact address
Select your property instead of using another home on the same road.
Save the next dates
Note black, grey, purple-lidded and subscribed green dates, plus the food-waste start date when your revised 2026 calendar arrives.
East Lindsey’s Black–Grey–Black–Purple Collection Pattern
This is one of the most important East Lindsey-specific facts. “Fortnightly refuse and recycling” does not mean the grey and purple bins are each emptied every fortnight.
East Lindsey Standard Wheeled Bin Sizes
| Container | Standard capacity | Main purpose | Normal frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black bin | 180 litres | General non-recyclable household refuse | Every 2 weeks |
| Grey bin | 240 litres | Clean, dry mixed recycling excluding paper/card | Every 4 weeks |
| Purple-lidded bin | 240 litres | Clean, dry paper and cardboard only | Every 4 weeks |
| Green garden bin | 240 litres | Subscribed household garden waste | 21 collections during 2026/27 subscription year |
| Food outdoor caddy | 23 litres | Household food waste after individual 2026 service start | Weekly |
What Each East Lindsey Household Bin Is Really For
Black Refuse Bin
General household items that cannot use East Lindsey’s recycling, paper/card, garden, electrical, bulky or specialist waste routes.
Grey Mixed Recycling
Clean, dry, loose glass, tins, cans, foil, aerosols, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, trays and cartons.
Purple-Lidded Paper & Card
Clean and dry paper and cardboard kept separate so it can be sent to a specialist paper processor without contamination from wet recycling.
Orange-Lidded Food Caddy
New weekly food-waste collection being introduced during Autumn 2026. Wait for your household’s updated calendar before beginning to use it.
Black Bin: Current 2026 General-Waste Rules
Typical black-bin waste
- Soft plastic films and wrappers
- Crisp packets and food pouches
- Plastic carrier bags
- Kitchen roll, tissues and wipes
- Disposable nappies
- Takeaway packaging unsuitable for recycling
- Polystyrene and bubble wrap
- Hard household plastics not accepted kerbside
- Bagged shredded paper
- Wet or dirty paper/card
Food waste during the 2026 transition
Older/current black-bin guidance includes food waste because East Lindsey’s separate food collection was not yet operating district-wide when that guidance was produced.
Once the new weekly service starts for your property, use the new orange-lidded outdoor caddy for food instead.
Your new household collection calendar should tell you when that change applies.
Grey Recycling Bin: Clean, Dry and Loose
| Accepted material | Preparation | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Glass bottles and jars | Empty and keep reasonably clean. | Do not mix ceramics or drinking glasses. |

| Foil and aerosols | Clean foil; aerosols should be empty. | Avoid hazardous or non-household containers. |
| Plastic bottles | Empty and squash to save space. | Soft film is not the same recycling stream. |
| Cleaning/toiletry bottles | Empty before recycling. | Do not recycle containers with hazardous residue. |
| Plastic pots, tubs and trays | Clean and dry. | Black/brown food trays are excluded by current guidance. |
| Cartons | Empty before placing loose in bin. | Do not put paper/card packaging in the grey bin. |
| Bottle lids/tops | Accepted with normal mixed recycling. | Keep unrelated small non-packaging plastic out. |

East Lindsey Food Waste Collections: The Important 2026 Transition
Many residents are receiving food caddies before the actual weekly collection starts. That makes the new household calendar especially important.
Week commencing 27 July 2026
District-wide delivery of new food-waste containers began. Flats and Houses in Multiple Occupation are being handled separately by a dedicated team.
Household caddy pack
Each normal household receives a 5-litre grey kitchen caddy, 23-litre black outdoor caddy with an orange lid, an initial roll of liners, instructions and an updated collection schedule.
September 2026
Deliveries are underway, but the live council instruction says not to start using the caddy until the household receives its new collection calendar.
Autumn 2026
Weekly collections are being introduced. A June council announcement described the expected start as October 2026, but residents should follow the date sent for their own property.
How the New East Lindsey Food Caddy Works
5L kitchen caddy
Keep this indoors for everyday scraps. It is not the container that should be placed outside for collection.
23L outdoor caddy
Empty kitchen-caddy contents into the larger outdoor container. Its orange lid/handle helps distinguish it from other bins.
Weekly after launch
Put the outdoor caddy out on the same normal collection day as your scheduled black, grey or purple-lidded bin.
Food accepted
- Plate scrapings and leftovers
- Raw or cooked meat and bones
- Raw or cooked fish, bones and shells
- Fruit and vegetable peelings
- Dairy, yoghurt, cheese and eggs
- Bread, cakes and pastries
- Rice, pasta and beans
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
- Pet food removed from packaging
- Mouldy food
- Small amounts of sauce/gravy remaining on food
Keep out
- Food packaging
- Milk and other free liquids
- Soup or liquid oil unless absorbed by food
- Garden waste
- Any other non-food material
East Lindsey’s 5:30am Bin Rule
East Lindsey has an earlier presentation time than many neighbouring councils. Do not rely on the lorry normally reaching your street later in the morning.
Ready by 5:30am
Present wheeled bins or approved sacks at the required point by 5:30am on the scheduled collection morning.
Edge of property
Normal bins should be placed at the edge of the property or at the collection point agreed with the council.
Lid fully closed
Waste must fit inside the correct bin with the lid shut. Waste forcing the lid open can cause the entire bin to be rejected.
East Lindsey’s 80kg Maximum Bin Weight
Common causes
Soil, stones, rubble, dense DIY material and heavily compacted waste can make a bin much heavier than ordinary household refuse.
What the crew does
A bin exceeding the safe lift weight can be stickered/rejected rather than emptied.
Best fix
Remove heavy material and use the appropriate recycling-centre or specialist disposal route before the next scheduled collection.
Extra Bags Beside East Lindsey Bins Are Not Collected
East Lindsey’s current collection rules are stricter than councils that accept limited recycling beside the wheelie bin.
Why the rule matters
Side waste can create litter, obstruct collection points and bypass the designed capacity of the household collection system.
If you have genuine excess
Use an appropriate Lincolnshire Household Waste Recycling Centre, or ask East Lindsey for advice if you have a continuing capacity issue that may qualify for a larger/additional bin.
East Lindsey Missed Bin Rules
Report quickly and make sure the bin was genuinely missed rather than rejected.
Strong missed-bin report
- The postcode finder showed that bin was due.
- The correct council bin was used.
- It was at the correct point by 5:30am.
- The lid was closed.
- The contents were correct.
- The bin was below the safe weight.
- No council reason has already been recorded.
Common reasons no return is made
- Wrong materials in the bin
- Bin put out too late
- Non-East Lindsey bin
- Side waste presented
- Unauthorised additional/larger bin
- Waste too compacted to fall out
- Parked cars blocked access
East Lindsey Missed / Rejected Bin Checker
Road Closures, Parked Cars and Bad Weather
Road closure
If the crew cannot gain access because of a road closure, residents should leave bins presented. East Lindsey aims to return within around five working days.
Parked vehicles
If parked vehicles block collection-vehicle access, the council says it will not normally make a special return. The bin waits until the next scheduled round.
Severe weather
For weather-related missed rounds, East Lindsey says every effort will be made to empty affected bins within around one week of the scheduled date.
Bin Emptied but Waste Is Still Stuck Inside?
Loosen the remaining material yourself and leave it for the next scheduled collection. The crew does not normally make a special return solely because compacted or frozen contents failed to fall from the bin.
East Lindsey Green Waste Collection 2026/27
Green bin accepts
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge trimmings and cuttings
- Flowers and plants with soil removed
- Leaves and bark
- Twigs and suitable branches
Green bin does not accept
- Soil
- Food waste
- Plastic or biodegradable bags
- Animal waste or bedding
- Large planks or pieces of wood
- Rubble and stones
Who Can Request an Additional or Larger East Lindsey Bin?
There is a formal capacity route for households with genuine higher needs.
5+ household members
A household with five or more people can ask to be assessed for additional or larger refuse capacity.
Two children in nappies
Families with two or more children under four who are in nappies can also apply.
Healthcare waste
Dressings, colostomy bags, incontinence pads and similar household healthcare needs can justify additional capacity.
Properties That Cannot Use Normal Wheelie Bins
East Lindsey can provide sack collections where a monitoring officer determines that wheeled bins are not practical because of the property’s circumstances.
Purple refuse sacks
Eligible sack households are allocated the equivalent of approximately 3 purple domestic-waste sacks per fortnight.
Grey recycling sacks
Eligible properties also receive grey recycling sacks for the four-weekly recycling collection.
Annual rolls are normally delivered around November. Residents can use the council’s sack form for replacement faulty sacks, additional sacks or a request to change to sack collection.
Assisted Waste Collections
Residents who cannot physically move their bins or sacks because of disability, illness, infirmity or another condition may be able to receive an assisted collection.
Who may qualify
The service is intended for households where nobody else living at the property is able to present the wheeled bins or sacks at the kerbside.
East Lindsey may visit the property to confirm eligibility and can ask for medical evidence.
How collection works
Once approved, staff collect and return containers from an agreed accessible point.
The location must remain visible and accessible on collection day.
Healthcare Waste, Clinical Waste and Sharps
Healthcare waste does not all use the same route. Contact the council where treatment creates unusual or higher-volume household waste.
| Waste | East Lindsey route | Important rule |
|---|---|---|
| Dressings / colostomy bags / incontinence products | Usually wrapped and placed in black household waste after appropriate advice. | Larger black-bin capacity can be considered if required. |
| Nappies / sanitary items | Wrapped black-bin waste. | Two young children in nappies can support an additional-bin application. |
| Needles / sharps | Try the GP first; East Lindsey can arrange collection when required. | Sharps must always be inside sealed approved boxes. |
| Blood products / human tissue / bodily fluids | Not collected as normal East Lindsey household clinical waste. | Contact the GP or healthcare provider for specialist advice. |
Moving Into an East Lindsey Property With No Bins
Use the dedicated New Standard-Size Wheeled Bins form rather than reporting the bins as stolen.
New resident
East Lindsey can provide the standard refuse and recycling container set and access to the appropriate property collection calendar.
Charges can apply
A credit/debit card may be required when ordering standard bins. Containers supplied can be new or reconditioned.
Lost, Stolen, Damaged or Not-Returned Bins
Lost / stolen
Use the dedicated lost/stolen/damaged-bin form if you already lived at the property and a council bin has disappeared.
Damaged bin
Report the damage. Depending on how it occurred, East Lindsey may ask for payment for a replacement.
Crew did not return bin
East Lindsey has a separate form specifically for a bin that was emptied but not returned to the property.
East Lindsey Bulky & Electrical Waste Collection
Refuse-truck items
Where an item is scheduled for collection by a refuse truck, it can be taken on the household’s next black-bin collection day if the order is placed by 1pm on the last working day before collection.
Put those items at the normal bin collection point by 5:30am.
Box-vehicle items
Other eligible bulky/electrical items are collected by a separate box vehicle within 10 working days of the order.
Follow the presentation instruction given when booking.
Christmas, New Year and Green-Waste Changes
Some East Lindsey properties have revised collection dates during Christmas and New Year. Check the postcode finder rather than assuming the normal weekday still applies.
Main household bins
Revised Christmas dates are published through the waste collection postcode finder.
If a resident misses a revised collection because bins were not presented, they may have to wait for the next scheduled collection.
Green waste
Green-waste collections are suspended for approximately two weeks around Christmas and New Year.
Subscribed households can put a real Christmas tree into the green bin on the first eligible collection after Christmas if it is chopped up sufficiently to fit entirely inside the bin.

What Happens to East Lindsey Household Waste After Collection?
Black residual waste
Most East Lindsey residual household rubbish is routed into Lincolnshire’s Energy from Waste system rather than simply being buried in landfill.
Grey recycling

East Lindsey Refuse Collection FAQs
1. How do I find my exact East Lindsey refuse collection day?
Use East Lindsey District Council’s official Waste Collection Days postcode checker. Enter your postcode and select your exact property. The result is more reliable for a household than copying another street or trying to calculate dates from the general four-week pattern.
2. What is the normal East Lindsey black, grey and purple bin pattern?
The normal four-week cycle is black bin in week one, grey mixed recycling in week two, black bin in week three and purple-lidded paper/card in week four, before repeating. Black is therefore normally fortnightly while grey and purple-lidded collections are normally four-weekly.
3. What time must East Lindsey bins be put out?
Bins and approved sacks must normally be presented at the edge of the property or agreed collection point by 5:30am on collection day. Putting them out the previous evening is often the safest way to avoid missing such an early deadline.
4. What is the maximum East Lindsey wheelie-bin weight?
East Lindsey states that its mechanical lifting equipment has a maximum permitted bin weight of 80kg. An overweight bin can be rejected and marked as too heavy. Remove dense or unsuitable material before the next scheduled collection.
5. When do East Lindsey food-waste collections start in 2026?
Food-caddy deliveries began from the week commencing 27 July 2026. The council describes weekly collections as beginning during Autumn 2026 and an earlier announcement referred to October. The current council instruction is not to start using the caddy until your new household collection calendar arrives, so follow the start date given for your property.
6. How quickly must I report a missed East Lindsey bin?
A missed black, grey, purple-lidded or subscribed green collection should be reported within two working days of the scheduled date. East Lindsey investigates missed reports and can review vehicle CCTV. Where a genuine missed collection is confirmed, it normally aims to return within five working days.
7. Can I leave extra bags beside my East Lindsey bin?
No under the normal household service. East Lindsey says waste presented beside wheeled bins will not be collected. If you regularly exceed your capacity, check whether you qualify for an additional/larger bin or use an appropriate Household Waste Recycling Centre.
8. How much is East Lindsey green waste collection in 2026/27?
The current 2026/27 subscription costs £55 per green bin. A full subscription provides up to 21 collection dates from 30 March 2026 through 28 March 2027 when the household subscribed in time for the complete service. The standard green bin is 240 litres.
9. Who can apply for a larger East Lindsey refuse bin?
East Lindsey accepts applications where there are five or more people in the household, two or more children under four in nappies, or qualifying healthcare waste such as dressings, colostomy bags or incontinence pads. The council assesses the request and a delivery charge can apply.
10. Where can East Lindsey residents take waste that cannot go in household bins?
Lincolnshire County Council operates Household Waste Recycling Centres including Louth at Bolingbroke Road, LN11 0WA and Skegness at Warth Lane, PE25 2JS. Both currently open 9am to 4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and are closed Wednesday and Thursday. Always check the current site page before travelling.
