Find Your Thanet Bin Collection Day

Enter your postcode here to keep it handy, then open Thanet District Council’s official collection-day page. The council page asks for your postcode and address, then shows your next collection dates and recent collection status for the property.

Use the live address lookup before putting waste out. Thanet has different setups for standard wheelie-bin homes, seagull-proof bag areas, some flats, communal bins, garden waste subscribers and households moved to Simpler Recycling.
Quick answer

How do I check my Thanet Council bin collection schedule?

Open Thanet District Council’s official “Your bin collection day” page, enter your postcode, select your address and check the next collection dates. Use the live waste portal if you need status information or to report a missed bin. Put your bin, bag or box at the front boundary or agreed collection point by 6am on collection day. If your road is already listed on the missed-bin page, Thanet says you do not need to report it separately.

Thanet Bin Collection Calendar: Check Your Address Before Bin Night

Thanet collection dates are not one simple district-wide calendar. Your correct answer is your property’s live postcode lookup.

Thanet District covers Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Birchington, Westgate-on-Sea, Cliftonville, Garlinge, Westwood, Minster, Monkton, Acol, St Nicholas-at-Wade, Manston and nearby villages. Collection arrangements can vary by road, housing type, seagull-proof bag route, communal bin arrangement and whether your home is included in the 2026 Simpler Recycling change.

1

Open the Thanet collection-day page

Use the official page rather than an old PDF or a neighbour’s reminder.

2

Enter your postcode

Select the exact address from the dropdown because flats and nearby roads can have different arrangements.

3

Check each collection stream

Your page can show rubbish, mixed recycling, food recycling, paper/card or garden waste depending on your property setup.

4

Use downloadable 2026 calendars only after checking your round

Thanet offers Fortnightly A, Fortnightly B, Weekly, Garden Waste and other calendars, but the address lookup tells you which one applies.

Resident habit: save the collection-day page and the waste portal on your phone. Thanet’s missed-bin system is linked to live vehicle information, so it can show whether a collection was completed, not presented, blocked, restricted access or delayed.

2026 service change

Simpler Recycling in Thanet 2026: What Changed from 13 April?

From Monday 13 April 2026, some Thanet households moved to a revised recycling and waste collection setup.

Thanet says most households already used the system, but around 27,000 extra properties were affected by the 2026 changes. If your property is affected, your schedule should include a weekly food waste collection, general waste every two weeks, and mixed recycling every two weeks. The exact container may depend on your property type and what the council supplies.

Weekly food waste

A small silver kitchen caddy and a larger brown lockable outdoor caddy are used where the food waste service applies.

Mixed recycling every two weeks

For affected properties, mixed recycling can include paper, cardboard, glass, tins and plastics together in the supplied clear sacks or suitable recycling container.

General waste every two weeks

General waste is collected separately from food waste and recycling. Use tied black sacks inside the black bin or seagull-proof bag where required.

Do not assume your neighbour’s setup

Some existing households may still use blue-lidded mixed recycling, red paper/card bags and food caddies. Check your postcode and address first.

Important: Thanet’s own guidance has different instructions depending on whether you are on the existing container system or the new Simpler Recycling arrangement. Always check the address lookup and council page for your property before changing what you put out.

Container guide

Thanet Bins, Bags and Boxes Explained

Thanet residents may use different containers depending on property type and collection scheme, so the correct container is address-specific.

Blue-lidded bin or blue box

Used for mixed recycling on the standard guidance: rinsed food tins, cans, clean foil, empty aerosols, plastic bottles, plastic tubs, ready-meal trays and glass bottles or jars.

Brown lockable food bin

Used for food recycling where offered. Do not put out the small silver kitchen caddy for collection; use the larger outdoor lockable food caddy.

Red bag or red paper/card route

Used for paper and card where that system applies. Some Simpler Recycling properties may instead use clear sacks for mixed recycling.

Black bin or seagull-proof bag

Used for non-recyclable household rubbish. Waste should be in tied black sacks inside the bin or seagull-proof bag.

Garden waste bin

Paid annual subscription. It is digitally identified by the council’s in-cab system, so stickers or tags are not required.

Clear sacks

For households moved to the Simpler Recycling clear-sack setup, the council provides clear plastic sacks for mixed recycling.

Recycling

Thanet Recycling Collection: Blue-Lidded Bin, Red Bag, Clear Sacks and Common Contamination Mistakes

The main recycling mistake in Thanet is using the right material in the wrong container for your property’s scheme.

Container / streamYes pleaseNo thank you
Blue-lidded bin or blue boxRinsed tins, cans, foil, empty aerosols, plastic bottles, plastic tubs and trays, glass bottles and jars.Hard plastic toys, cartons, paper/cardboard, plastic bags, plastic film, polystyrene, drinking glasses, light bulbs, oven-proof glass or sheet glass.
Food waste caddyMeat, fish, bones, fruit, vegetables, dairy, bread, pasta, rice, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells and pet food.Plastic bags, cling film, pet poo, cat litter, liquids, oil, liquid fats or food packaging.
Red bag / paper and cardNewspapers, magazines, envelopes, printer paper, paper bags, leaflets, flattened cardboard boxes and cereal boxes.Metallic or shiny cards/wrapping paper, hardback books, used tissues and wet wipes.
Simpler Recycling clear sacksFor affected households, mixed recycling can go into clear sacks or a suitable container as instructed by the council.Do not keep using old red bags or blue boxes if the council has told your household to switch.

Simple check: if you are on the standard container guidance, paper/card does not go in the blue-lidded bin. If you are on the new Simpler Recycling clear-sack setup, follow the specific instructions shown for your property.

Food waste

Thanet Food Waste Collection: Brown Lockable Bin and Silver Kitchen Caddy Rules

Where food recycling is offered, it is collected weekly and should be separated from general waste.

Use the small silver caddy inside your kitchen, then transfer food waste to the larger brown lockable caddy outside. Thanet says not to put the silver kitchen caddy out for collection. Food recycling should not be placed in plastic bags or cling film because plastic will not compost. You may use newspaper or compostable liners.

Accepted food waste

Meat, fish, bones, fruit, vegetables, dairy, bread, pasta, rice, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells and pet food.

Not accepted

Plastic bags, cellophane, cling film, pet poo, cat litter, liquids, oil, liquid fats and food packaging.

Wildlife tip

Thanet is a coastal district, so keep the outdoor caddy locked and present it correctly to reduce gull and pest problems.

General waste

Black Bin and Seagull-Proof Bag: Thanet Non-Recyclable Waste Rules

The black bin or seagull-proof bag is for household rubbish that cannot be recycled, reused, composted or taken through a specialist route.

Thanet’s guidance says not to put loose domestic waste into the black-lidded bin or seagull-proof bag. Waste should be placed in tied black sacks and then into the bin or bag. This helps reduce litter, pests and gull attacks, especially on streets where seagull-proof bags are used instead of wheeled bins.

Use for

Non-recyclable household rubbish that cannot go in food waste, mixed recycling, paper/card, garden waste, bulky waste or the recycling centre.

Do not use for

Food waste where food recycling is offered, garden waste, rubble, hazardous waste, scrap metal, electrical items, batteries or recyclable packaging.

Black bin limit

Thanet allows one black-lidded bin as standard per property, with extra black bins considered for households with five or more permanent residents.

Garden waste

Thanet Garden Waste Collection 2026/27: Cost, Subscription Period, Extra Bins and Accepted Items

Garden waste is a paid annual service in Thanet and is separate from normal rubbish and recycling.

The 2026/27 garden waste charges are listed as £73 per year for annual subscription, £44 one-off bin hire per bin, and £36.50 for an additional bin. The scheme runs from 1 April to 31 March, with a four-week break over the Christmas period. Thanet says direct debit is no longer accepted for the garden waste service, and payment is made through the online portal by debit or credit card.

Accepted garden waste

Garden weeds, hedge trimmings, small twigs and branches less than 7.5cm diameter, grass cuttings, flowers, plants and leaves.

Not accepted

Soil, food waste, pet waste, large branches, stones, rubble, paper, wood or plastic.

Collection pattern

Garden waste is collected once every two weeks through the year, apart from a few weeks over Christmas and New Year.

No sticker needed

Thanet uses its in-cab system to digitally identify subscribed addresses, so stickers and tags are no longer required.

Garden waste missed-bin rule: if the portal shows “bin not presented” or “non-permitted items”, Thanet says it cannot return until your next scheduled garden waste collection.

Missed collection

Missed Bin Collection Thanet: Check the Live Road List Before Reporting

Thanet’s missed-bin page includes a live schedule for roads where crews had access or operational problems.

If your road is listed, Thanet says the council is already aware and you do not need to report it. They aim to return and finish collecting within two working days, excluding weekends and bank holidays. If your road is not listed, you can report a missed collection if your bin, bag or box was presented outside your property by 6am and you are reporting before 5.30pm on the working day after the collection was due.

1

Check the live missed-street list

If your road is listed as missed, restricted access or no access, do not submit a duplicate report.

2

Check the 6am rule

The bin, bag or box must have been at the front boundary or agreed collection point by 6am.

3

Check the portal status

The portal can show statuses such as bin not presented, non-permitted items, collection not started or completed.

4

Report quickly if eligible

Report before 5.30pm on the working day after your collection was due.

5

Remove wrong items if refused

If the portal shows non-permitted items, remove them and wait for the next scheduled collection.

Assisted collection

Thanet Assisted Collections: Help Putting Bins or Bags Out

Residents with a physical inability, illness or disability may request help putting bins or bags out for collection.

Thanet’s assisted collection form asks for the name of your doctor and surgery address. The council says it no longer supplies assisted collection stickers, so do not assume a sticker is needed. Use the official assisted collection request route if you cannot present containers and do not have household help.

Tip / recycling centres

Thanet Household Waste Recycling Centres: Margate and Richborough Booking Rules

The two Thanet-area household waste recycling centres are provided by Kent County Council, not Thanet District Council.

Margate HWRC

Kent states residents who do not pay Council Tax to a Kent council must pay £10 to visit, under its cross-border policy.

Local resident tips

Thanet Bin Day Tips Residents Learn the Hard Way

These small checks help prevent seagull mess, missed reports being rejected, contaminated recycling and wasted tip trips.

Do not put bins out late

The missed-bin checklist asks whether the bin, bag or box was presented at 6am. If it was late, the portal may show “bin not presented”.

Use the portal status

If the portal says collection not started, the council is already aware. If it says non-permitted items, remove them and wait for the next round.

Protect waste from gulls

Use the correct bin or seagull-proof bag, tie black sacks and keep food waste inside the lockable caddy where provided.

Book the tip first

Margate and Richborough HWRCs require a booking. Do not load the car and travel without a confirmed slot.
