Quick answer

How do I check Peterborough City Council bin collection dates?

Use Peterborough City Council’s official WasteWorks postcode lookup. It shows collection days for black general waste, green recycling and brown garden waste bins. Grey food waste bins are collected weekly when either your green or black bin is collected. Put bins out by 6.45am on collection day. Missed black, green or brown bins can be reported online after 5pm on collection day and before 4pm the next working day, but the council does not return for missed food bins because the food waste service is weekly.

Bin collection days

Peterborough collects waste from black, grey, green and brown bins, and the postcode lookup is the safest route for address-specific collection days.

What goes in which bin

The official bin-sorting pages explain black general waste, green recycling, grey food waste and brown garden waste.

Garden waste 2026/27

The brown bin subscription runs from 27 April 2026 to 23 April 2027, with one bin costing £58 per year.

Fengate recycling centre

Peterborough City Council Bin Collection Schedule 2026: Check Your Dates by Address

Your Peterborough bin collection date depends on your exact address, not only your postcode area or neighbourhood.

Use the official WasteWorks lookup if you live in Central Peterborough, Bretton, Werrington, Paston, Dogsthorpe, Millfield, Eastfield, Hampton, Orton, Fletton, Stanground, Eye, Thorney, New England, Woodston, Walton or a newer development. Collection rounds can differ by street, access, flats, new estates and rural edges.

1

Open WasteWorks

Use the official WasteWorks page to check your black, green and brown bin dates or to report a missed collection when the reporting window is open.

2

Enter postcode and select address

Use your full postcode and exact property. Do not use a neighbour’s address because flats, private roads and new-build homes can have different arrangements.

3

Check each bin stream

Black general waste, green recycling and brown garden waste are shown through the collection lookup. Grey food waste is weekly, collected when either your green or black bin is collected.

4

Put bins out by 6.45am

Bins should be out by 6.45am, not blocking the pavement, with lids closed and no unacceptable items inside.

Resident tip: if your black or green bin is collected very early some weeks, put it out the evening before while keeping the pavement clear. The official rule is that it must be ready by 6.45am.

Collection pattern

Peterborough Bin Collection Pattern: Black, Green, Grey Food and Brown Garden Bins

Peterborough households can have up to four different bins, each with different rules.

Bin Use Collection note Quick warning
Black bin General household rubbish that cannot be reused, recycled or composted. Check exact day through WasteWorks. No excess waste beside or on top of the bin, except the first black bin collection after Christmas where limited extra bags may be allowed.
Green bin Clean, loose household recycling. Check exact day through WasteWorks. Do not put nappies, black bin bags, food waste, batteries, vapes or electrical items inside.
Grey food bin Weekly food waste collection using indoor and outdoor grey caddies. Collected weekly when either green or black bin is collected. Peterborough does not return to empty missed food bins because it is a weekly service.
Brown bin Optional paid garden waste subscription. Normally same week as black bin; some areas have a day earlier collection. Garden waste must not go in black, green or grey food bins.

Area note: for residents in Millfield North, Dogsthorpe South, Eye, Thorney and Werrington East, Peterborough states that brown garden bins are collected a day earlier than the black bin.

Bin types

Peterborough Black Bin, Green Bin, Grey Food Bin and Brown Garden Bin Explained

The easiest way to avoid a rejected collection is to keep general waste, recycling, food waste and garden waste separate.

Black bin

General waste

For household rubbish you cannot reuse, recycle or compost.

  • Nappies in tied bags
  • Black bags
  • Polystyrene
  • Tissues and kitchen roll
  • Small pet waste in tied bags

Green bin

Recycling

For clean recyclable household waste placed loose in the bin.

  • Plastic bottles, tubs, trays, pots and film
  • Food tins, drink cans, clean foil and empty aerosols
  • Paper, card, cartons and envelopes
  • Glass bottles and jars

Grey food caddy

Weekly food waste

For cooked and uncooked food waste using indoor and outdoor caddies.

  • Plate scrapings and leftovers
  • Raw and cooked meat and fish
  • Eggs, tea bags and coffee grounds
  • Fruit, vegetables, bread and dairy solids

Brown bin

Paid garden waste

For subscribed garden waste only, placed loose in the brown bin.

  • Grass cuttings
  • Hedge trimmings
  • Leaves, weeds and plants
  • Windfall fruit from the garden

Do not put batteries, vapes or electricals inside bins: Peterborough says they can cause fires in collection vehicles. Batteries and vapes must be kept separate and placed in separate plastic bags on top of the bin lid where the kerbside service applies.

Food waste

Peterborough Grey Food Waste Bin: Weekly Collection, Liners and Flats

Peterborough provides a weekly food waste collection service using two grey food caddies.

Each household should have a smaller indoor grey caddy and a larger outdoor grey caddy. Fill the indoor caddy, transfer it to the outdoor caddy and put the outdoor caddy out on collection day. Peterborough collects food waste weekly when your green or black bin is collected.

Free liner rolls

Each roll has 40 liners. Peterborough estimates around three liners a week is reasonable and says it will not provide one household with more than four rolls per year.

How to request liners

Tie a liner or plastic bag to your outdoor food bin lid on collection day, or collect up to two rolls from a listed pick-up location.

Flats

Food waste collection for flats has been rolled out in stages. If your building does not yet receive separate food waste collection, follow the council’s flat-specific guidance.

No return for missed food bins

The council does not return for missed grey food bins because the service is weekly.

Missed collection

Missed Bin Collection Peterborough: Report After 5pm and Before 4pm Next Working Day

Do not report a missed Peterborough bin too early. The WasteWorks missed-bin option only appears after 5pm on the scheduled day.

You can report a missed black, green or brown bin after 5pm on collection day. You have until 4pm the next working day after the scheduled collection to let the council know. Leave the bin out for collection after reporting. Do not use “Report Damaged Bin” to report a missed collection because those cases may be automatically closed.

1

Check your bin was due

Use the postcode lookup to confirm whether your black, green or brown bin was scheduled for that address.

2

Check presentation rules

The bin should have been out by 6.45am, not blocking the pavement, with the lid closed, under 50kg and without unacceptable items.

3

Wait until after 5pm

If you check too early, the missed-bin report option may not appear because crews may still be working in the area.

4

Report before 4pm next working day

Use the official WasteWorks system and keep the bin out after you report it.

Food waste reminder: missed grey food bin collections are not returned to because the food waste service is weekly. Put the caddy out again on the next weekly collection.

No garden waste in other bins

Garden waste must not be placed in general waste, recycling or food bins.

Move-house tip: if you are moving within Peterborough, call the council to transfer the garden waste subscription. Cancelling Council Tax does not automatically cancel the brown bin subscription.

Where to leave items

Place them where your black bin is normally collected, visible to the crew, without blocking pedestrian access or the highway.
